Don’t force personalization in your cold email templates
Subject: Max at Alpha Corp
Josh, what are you doing to reach salespeople that miss your posts so you can sell more guides? X an Y are widening their reach without creating additional content. Worth a convo?”
Timing is probably off, but would you be open to seeing how you could avoid overpaying taxes?
Many people end up over-personalizing their emails by adding disingenuous comments that make the receiver feel awkward.
You don’t have to personalize to be personal.
Above, Josh uses the first sentence to illumination a question that sparks curiosity. He doesn’t add false complements and shared interests.
Josh Braun’s Zelda cold email template
Below is Josh Braun’s famous Zelda deck. Here he breaks down how the Zelda template works and why it’s effective.
On slide 34 above, Josh breaks introduces the Zelda cold email template below. This template works because:
- It highlights a problem
- It gives an example of where the problem was solves
- It generates curiosity by withholding a solution and asking if the prospect would like to learn more
Subject: bad guys in Levels 1-3
Link – Came across your LinkedIn and saw that you’re using a brown sword to defeat bad guys in Levels 1-3.
Quick question: How are you defeating stronger bad guys in Level 3 without loosing any health hearts?
Princess Peach just defeated Level 3 & 4 bad guys without losing any health just by using a lesser known weapon.
Open to learning more?
Either way, godspeed on your quest to rescue Zelda. Anyone who’s collected 43 gems is okay in my book. Will the Wizard
How To Sign Off
The more desperate you are to close a deal the harder it is. Prospects can sense desperation and it makes them feel queasy.
Josh Braun has some brilliant sign off lines that put prospects at easy and increase the chance of opening up a conversion.
“Feel free to say no if you don’t see a fit.”
“Either way, good luck with the New York marathon. Remember, pain is temporary but the Instagram photo lasts a lifetime.”
“Timing is probably off, but would you be open to seeing how you could avoid overpaying taxes?”
When You Can’t Break Through
When you’ve reached out several times and without a reply take a step back and acknowledge that this approach might not be working for the prospect.
Josh – please accept my apology. It looks like somewhere along the way I did a poor job of explaining how we could potentially help your SDRs kick more ass by meeting monthly booking targets.
My intent isn’t to move anything forward. Just wondering if you’d be open to sharing some feedback so I could better address your needs in future. Timing off, money, don’t trust people with receding hairline?
Okay hopefully, that wasn’t too painful. Thanks for reading. Either way, thanks for telling me about the traits you look for when hiring SDRs. I told Jessica, the Sales Manager at XYZ company about your role-playing exercise to determine coachability and she’s already implementing it.
Have an awesome week,
